The story behind the Titanic is still one which holds much fascination. The BBC are spending £10 million to present a 4 part mini series, Titanic, created by Julian Fellowes, following hus huge success with Downton Abbey.
The Olympic class luxury passenger liner was built at Harland and Wolff shipyard in Belfast and was owned by The White Star Line. The largest passenger liner of its time set sail on her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York on 10 April 1912 with 2223 people on board and sank on 15 April 1912 after hitting an iceberg, resulting in the deaths of 1517 passengers.
The ship was built to the highest standard of luxury, using the most advanced technological engineering advances and safety precautions available at the time. On board was a telephone system, a swimming pool, a Turkish bath, a library, and extensive wood panelling. The huge number of well-known individuals and eminent figures of the day who were on board and the opulence of the ship made the sinking and the scale of the disaster one of the biggest and most talked-about maritime tragedies of all time.
Controversy surrounded the number of lifeboats on board the ship which were insufficient for the huge number of passengers. It was a calm night when the ship struck the icerberg just seconds after the lookout Frederick Fleet spotted the iceberg. Freezing conditions meant that the huge number of passengers on board survived for a very short time in the water because of hypothermia.
The exercise of retrieving the few survivors and recovering and burying the bodies of the dead was a massive undertaking given the extent of the loss of lives.
Fascination with the history of The Titanic continues. For many years, explorations were carried out to discover the wreck, which was finally located by the American French team in 1985. There was some debate as to who owned the wreck. Investigations were carried out with a number of theories discussed as to what had caused the sinking of the ship.
The sinking of The Titanic has been the subject of 2 major films, A Night to Remember from 1958 and The Titanic in 1997 from James Cameron. There are a number of books written on the subject of The Titanic.
To commemorate the 100 year anniversary, Airfix have released a new model kit. No doubt there will be a number of events planned to mark the anniversary.
